چکیده

This paper considers a framework where data from correlated sources are transmitted with the help of network coding in ad hoc network topologies. The correlated data are encoded independently at sensors and network coding is employed in the intermediate nodes in order to improve the data delivery performance. In such settings, we focus on the problem of reconstructing the sources at decoder when perfect decoding is not possible due to losses or bandwidth variations. We show that the source data similarity can be used at decoder to permit decoding based on a novel and simple approximate decoding scheme. We analyze the influence of the network coding parameters and in particular the size of finite coding fields on the decoding performance. We further determine the optimal field size that maximizes the expected decoding performance as a trade-off between information loss incurred by limiting the resolution of the source data and the error probability in the reconstructed data. Moreover, we show that the performance of the approximate decoding improves when the accuracy of the source model increases even with simple approximate decoding techniques. We provide illustrative examples showing how the proposed algorithm can be deployed in sensor networks and distributed imaging applications. & 2012 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Reconstruction of Network Coded Sources From Incomplete Datasets

We investigate the problem of recovering source information from an incomplete set of network coded data with help of prior information about the sources. This problem naturally arises in wireless networks, where the number of network coded packets available at the receiver may not be sufficient for exact decoding due to channel dynamics or timing constraints, for example. We study the theoreti...

Approximate decoding for network coded inter-dependent data

In this paper, we consider decoding of loss tolerant data encoded by network coding and transmitted over error-prone networks. Intermediate network nodes typically perform the random linear network coding in a Galois field and a Gaussian elimination is used for decoding process in the terminal nodes. In such settings, conventional decoding approaches can unfortunately not reconstruct any encode...

Multichannel Decoding for Phase-Coded SSVEP Brain-Computer Interface

We propose a complex-valued multilayer feedforward neural network classifier for decoding of phase-coded information from steady-state visual evoked potentials. To optimize the performance of the classifier we supply it with two filter-based feature selection strategies. The proposed approaches could be used for a phase-coded brain-computer interface, enabling to encode several targets using on...

Approximating Throughput and Packet Decoding Delay in Linear Network Coded Wireless Broadcast

In this paper, we study a wireless packet broadcast system that uses linear network coding (LNC) to help receivers recover data packets that are missing due to packet erasures. We study two intertwined performance metrics, namely throughput and average packet decoding delay (APDD) and establish strong/weak approximation relations based on whether the approximation holds for the performance of e...
